What is the Catechism of the Catholic Church?
The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) is the official and authoritative compendium of the beliefs, doctrines, and moral teachings of the Catholic Church. Promulgated by Pope John Paul II on October 11, 1992 , it serves as a complete and comprehensive reference for all Catholics — clergy, religious, and laity — in understanding and living the fullness of the Christian faith.
The Catechism is organized around four foundational pillars, each reflecting a core dimension of Catholic life:
The Four Pillars of the Catechism
Pillar One: The Profession of Faith (The Creed)
This section explores what the Catholic Church believes — the articles of faith as expressed in the Apostles’ Creed and the Nicene Creed. It covers:
- The nature of God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
- The mystery of Creation
- The Incarnation, life, death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ
- The role of the Holy Spirit and the Church
- The Last Things: death, judgment, heaven, and hell
“Faith is the theological virtue by which we believe in God and believe all that He has said and revealed to us.” — CCC 1814
Pillar Two: The Celebration of the Christian Mystery (The Sacraments)
This section explains how the Church worships and celebrates the faith through the Seven Sacraments:
- Baptism — the gateway to life in the Spirit
- Confirmation — the strengthening of faith
- Eucharist — the source and summit of Christian life
- Reconciliation (Penance) — healing and forgiveness
- Anointing of the Sick — comfort and grace in suffering
- Holy Orders — ordained ministry
- Matrimony — the covenant of marriage
“The sacraments are efficacious signs of grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church, by which divine life is dispensed to us.” — CCC 1131
Pillar Three: Life in Christ (The Commandments)
This section addresses how Catholics are called to live their faith through moral and ethical conduct, guided by:
- The Ten Commandments
- The Beatitudes
- The virtues — theological and cardinal
- Social justice and the dignity of the human person
- The sanctity of human life
“The dignity of the human person is rooted in his creation in the image and likeness of God.” — CCC 1700
Pillar Four: Christian Prayer (The Lord’s Prayer)
This section reflects on how Catholics pray — the nature, forms, and tradition of prayer in the Church, with a deep reflection on the Our Father (Lord’s Prayer) as the model of all Christian prayer.
- Vocal prayer, meditation, and contemplation
- The Liturgy of the Hours
- The Our Father, phrase by phrase
“Prayer is the raising of one’s mind and heart to God or the requesting of good things from God.” — CCC 2559
